Below are the profiles of the children staying in the 'Birhor's Ashram'. The children have come to Sambalpur as orphans or as boarders to study at school. These children have come from remote villages and tribes in the state of Orissa. We have twenty five children living in the Ashram now but we would love to expand our Ashram to care for more children and we dream of one day making a school available to cater for the particular needs of educating our Orissa village children. Here are their stories;

My name is Boas Hemram. I am from KURAD Village which is 100 Km away from here. My father is an evangelist who is now working at Bolangi. I was studying in the Child Labour School where I was not able to attend the school regularly since I had to help my family by working with them. I have got 5 sisters and 3 brothers. I am happy that I am here studying at this Ashram now I am in Class Five. When I came here I was not able to recognize the alphabets but now I am first on my class and keep 80% marks. This year I am selected from the state side to give exams.

My name is Elias Lugun I am from village Kurmulei near Kenkhuti. I have 5 brothers and one sister. Now I am studying in class VIII. One of my brothers is affected by Polio not able to walk. Now I am 14 years old. My father works in the forest to collect the sail creepers to make robe. Before coming to this Ashram I was studying in my village government school but not able to attend regularly since I had to help my father to go to the forest. When I came here I was not able to read Oriya Language properly. I am proud that I got a chance to study in this Ashram. My hubby is to play Hockey. I want to be a teacher in future.

My name is Shivani Tudu. I am 13 years old. I do not have a father or mother I was going to the forest to collect wood and after selling. We would purchase the rice and cook the food where I was living. Two years ago I was brought to this Ashram at the age of 10 they admitted to the school on class two. I felt too shy to go to school. But I am so much happy that now I can read and write. Here I have learnt to be clean. I love to sing, and dance. I love to play Badminton and cricket. I get good dress and good food which I was not getting at my home. I have a small brother I wish that he also should come here for studying.

My name is Seema Horo. My father was in the Jail for 4 years so we were in poverty. My mother will go for work and bring food for me. Sometimes I was not getting proper food. Lamuel brought me here to stay with him in the hostel. He enrolled me in the school in class one. I was very small but they took care of me and now I am in class three. Now my father is out on bail from the court. He is now the Kitchen gardener of the Ashram (Hostel). I love to play string and to sing and dance. My aim in life is to be a teacher.

My name is Emmanuel Horo. My father is in the jail for 4 years and we were in great trouble. Though I was willing to study still I could not concentrate. I sometimes helped my mother in her work. Nobody was there to look after me. I was able to come here and joined in class One. Now, I am in class 5. I stood 3rd in the whole class. I love to play Carem Board Hockey. I like to study Bible. I want to be a polish man in future.

My name is Johon Behera. I do not have a father or a mother. I was on the street just going here and there with children. Somehow I came to this ashram and now I have changed a lot. I learn to live in cleanliness here. I also get clean good food, very good dress and the great thing that I was seeking was love now I get love here. I am studying in class 5. I like to play foot ball and cricket. I want to be a Pastor in future.My hobby is to swimming and gardening. I am so much happy here.

My name is Sontosini Hemram. I am 12 years old. My father died when I was very small. A few years after my mother married another person who did not take proper care of us. We have six brothers and a sister I am the youngest one. I came here three years ago. I now am studying in class 6th. I stood 4th position in my class. I like to play badminton and skipping. My hobby is kitchen gardening. I love to sing and dance. Also, my future plan is to be a teacher.

My hobby is to cook good dishes. I love to sing and dance. I love this hostel and want to stay until my study is finished. I want to be a teacher.

My name is Simon Kerketta I am from Kenkhuti. It is in the deep forest area. I had a great desire to study I am thankful to God for this chance to study here at the BIRHORS Ashram. I am here since three years. When I came here I was in class 5th but you cannot believe I was not able to recognize even the alphabets my teachers worked hard on me to bring me to this label. Now I am in class 8th.
I Love to play football and Hockey. I read my Bible every day I like to be a pastor in the future. I have learnt to keep my cloth clean. I love to play cricket and reading is my hubby. I love singing.

My name is Sirmon Lugun. Pastor Rendy and Uncle Tom visited our village. I lived in a jungle village. Last year on the board exam on the seventh class I failed so now I am again continuing in the same class. Please pray for me so that this year I will pass with good marks.
Whenever I get sick pastor uncle takes care of me and loves me very much. Please pray for me that I will be obedient to my teachers and do all class and home work of my study well. I was going to school by walk but now I got a cycle as a Christmas gift from Hope Chapel I am thank full to you and all the Hope Chapel members.
I Love to play football and hockey. I read my Bible every day I like to be a pastor in the future please pray for me. I have learnt to keep my clothes clean.

I am from a broken family though my father is still alive he is with another woman and is not taking care of us. My mother is a wise woman she worked hard to raise me up. I never thought that I will be able to study class 9. I am so much privileged to get a seat in this Ashram . All the children think of this Ashram like our own home. The food is homely. We get so much lover here, I did not think we could such love from anyone except our own mother. I love to sing and dance. I want to study more to be a teacher.

My name is Dilip Tudu. After my father and mothers death my elder sister took care of me and my brother. She was only 19 years old. It was very hard for her to feed us. So, I never thought of studying. But the Lord Jesus Loves me so much that an evangelist came to our village and told us about this Ashram then I and my brothers and sisters were interested to come over here. After coming here we are totally changed we get good food and cloth and we go to school. And we get tuition. I keep my cloth clean. I have learn to live cleanly. When I went home I begun to teach my people to stay clean some of them are also giving up their drinking habit. I am so happy that I get good food and cloth, and teaching how to be clean. They teach us everything that I did not know. I love to play karem board, cricket, and I like to beat the drums. I am studing in class four. I took 6th position in class three.

We spend our day with business form morning 5 am till 10 pm. We have our timetable to do. I love to live clean. I love to see the Cartoons Network. My teachers loves me because I study well and obey them I keep good marks in the school. This year I was selected to appear on the state exam . I want to continue my study. I want to be a big business officer in the future.

My name is Silani Lugun. I am from Kadelipali village. My father worked as a Social worker in Tata mines. Though I have father and Mother still they are away from me. My mother went to another man and my father did not take care of me. So, I am now just like with out father and a mother. I am so much privileged to be in this Ashram .
I am studying at Bhalupali School in class 7. I stay at the Birhors Ashram. I have three Brothers and sisters. One small brother died one year ago. I love to sing and dance. I am learning bicycle.
I get up early in the morning at 5 am. We do our personal work and then go for tuition then after eating the food we go to school . We study there until 4 pm. Then I come back to the hostel and play. Sometimes I stitch my cloth. We have a stitching machine; one for Boys and one for girls. In the hostel I have learnt this stitching. I get so much love. Auntie teaches me how to make chapatti. Now I have learnt to make chapatti, rice, dhal, soup and egg omelet. I love to stay clean.
